A Balanced State Budget and Your Tax Dollars

Representative Marva Beck knows there are three ways to solve any “budget shortfall”: cut spending, raise taxes or a combination of both. Representative Marva Beck knew in order to help our state economy recover, Texas had to cut state spending to close the budget gap. In the 82nd legislative session, Representative Marva Beck’s votes on the House floor were instrumental in creating a balanced budget that did not raise taxes while not dipping into the “Rainy Day Fund.”

Representative Marva Beck will continue to oppose efforts to tax increases in 2013.

Natural Resources

Representative Beck is a member of the Natural Resources Committee. In the 2011 session, Marva Beck worked to protect the ownership of groundwater by property owners. Representative Beck supports a state water plan to ensure that Texas has enough affordable water to sustain itself in the future so we can attract new business and industries that will generate more jobs for Texans. Additionally, Beck was a co-author of H.B. 8 which prohibits certain private transfer fees and preserves private real property rights.

Border Issues

As a member of the Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee, Representative Beck worked to ensure that the officers in the line of duty, both on the border and around Texas, have the tools to help combat the drug war and immigration issues that plague our great state. Representative Beck co-sponsored legislation that passed in 2011 which toughens penalties and laws against criminal involved in human trafficking.

Tort Reform

Representative Beck worked to further curb frivolous and unnecessary lawsuits by serving as a co-author of H.B. 274, the Omnibus Tort Reform Act of 2011.

Your Second Amendment Rights

Representative Beck strongly supports the Second Amendment. She joint authored legislation to allow employees with a CHL to store their handgun in their vehicle if their employer does not allow them to carry while at work.

A Commitment to Life

Marva Beck continues to work to protect innocent human life. She supports adult stem cell research. During the last legislative session, she supported amendments to cut off the flow of taxpayers money that provided abortions through Planned Parenthood. Representative Beck supported and co-authored H.B 15, the sonogram legislation that requires a pregnant mother to view a sonogram before choosing to abort her child and co-sponsored SB 257, which created the “Chose Life” license plate to support pregnant women considering adoption.

Education

Representative Marva Beck is a strong supporter of local public schools. As the mother of three, all of her children attended Texas public schools. She favors greater local control and believes that there must be comprehensive funding reform in a system that penalizes rural and smaller school districts and those that do not have a wealthy property tax base.

Pension Protection

Representative Marva Beck understands that many District 12 residents depend on a retirement check from one of our state public pension systems. Marva Beck will work to ensure that safeguards are in place so the highest ethical standards possible are in place and that those investing and managing these retirement funds are void of an conflicts of interests. Marva Beck wants to send a message to the ‘Bernie Madoff’s’ of this world to not mess with our Texas public pension funds.
